The Sacred Journey of Chardham

Yamunotri
Yamunotri is one of the four sacred shrines of the Char Dham Yatra, located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3,293 meters. It is the source of the holy Yamuna River, which is considered the sister of Yama, the god of death, and is believed to grant salvation and longevity to devotees.
The Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. Pilgrims take a sacred dip in the Yamuna River, believing it cleanses sins and protects against untimely death.

Gangotri
Gangotri is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India and marks the origin of the holy River Ganga. Located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, it is part of the Char Dham Yatra and holds immense spiritual significance for Hindus.
The Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, was built in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath's intense penance brought Ganga down from heaven to cleanse the sins of humanity. The actual source of the river, Gaumukh Glacier, is about 19 km from Gangotri and can be reached through a scenic trek.

Kedarnath
Kedarnath is one of the most revered Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and a key pilgrimage site in the Char Dham Yatra. Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 3,583 meters, the Kedarnath Temple is surrounded by majestic Himalayan peaks.According to Hindu mythology, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s blessings for redemption. Shiva, avoiding them, took the form of a bull and dived underground at Kedarnath, leaving his hump behind.
The temple was later built by the Pandavas and renovated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.

Badrinath
Badrinath is one of the holiest shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is a part of both the Char Dham Yatra and the Chota Char Dham Yatra. Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 3,133 meters, the Badrinath Temple is situated along the banks of the Alaknanda River. As per legends, Lord Vishnu meditated here under the Badri tree, and Goddess Lakshmi protected him by taking the form of the tree. The temple was originally established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and houses a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in a meditative posture.
Before entering the temple, pilgrims take a holy dip in Tapt Kund, a natural hot water spring believed to have healing properties.
